Vitesse holds a digital map of the environment, has industrial engineering data matching up to operational procedures, and uses a number of data points to set fair task times for employees.
By way of an example, if two pickers are each tasked with picking an order for 100 units and one picker is asked to visit 12 locations across 6 aisles and another picker visiting 35 locations across 18 aisles their units picked will the same but the time taken will vary – seems a reasonable logic and these variances exist on virtually every task.
Operations using Units per Hour (UPH) to measure employee performance do not have the advantage of accurate distances travelled being reflected in the target UPH rate – travel represents about 50% of the time it takes to complete picking tasks. Ergo, a huge defining element is missing from UPH targets making them inaccurate and inherently unfair.
Measuring efficiency achieved against target times is the way forward.
Employees being challenged to improve their performance levels would prefer to know the targets being set are fair and consistently so.
Everyone, regardless of the job they do, would welcome targets that reflect the actual work they are carrying out.
Wasted time is expensive but it can be identified and reduced.
Shift start and end, either side of break times and mid task are common areas where time is unproductive or lost. Furthermore, an errant forecast can create capacity that cannot always be squeezed out especially in time sensitive operations delivering high standards of service.
