Changing the way something is measured can be difficult.
Imperial and metric is a great example.
Miles and kilometres
Pounds and kilograms
Both still in use with metric becoming a more universally accepted measure.
If you have spoken in particular terms for most of your life, it naturally becomes a habit.
And habits can be hard to break.
The same can be found in warehouses.
Units per Hour (UPH) has been a long standing measure of employee output but it is out of date.
Measuring the efficiency and utilisation of employees is the ‘metric version’ by being more precise and much much fairer.
In a warehouse where variables can be found in nearly all tasks a standard measure of hourly output, like UPH, is unfair.
For illustration:
• How many metres are being walked?
• How many locations are being visited?
The answers to these two questions hugely inform the level of effort needed to complete the task in hand.
Modernising the measurement of employee performance in a warehouse is overdue – UPH is inherently unfair and has had its day.
Employees want to be treated fairly.
Customers want an optimal cost to serve.
Vitesse delivers on both fronts.
